Our vision for the new building for the House of Hungarian Music is to create a new strong connectionbetween the City Park, surrounding activities and the site history. We put it all into the newmuseum musical mix.
At first, we have a unique city park environment. At the same time it is characterized with a highvalued greenery and restful atmosphere for every citizen to have some good time with a family, agirlfriend, and parents or even alone. So we compose these features to get the museums' identity.
Secondly, the museum area is placed in the center of the crossroads: there is a lake with theembankment to the North, a public transport route to the South-West, new pedestrian boulevardunder projection to the South-East that will connect all the surrounding museums (photography, ethnography,
arts). In relation to the context we came up with the idea to support this active perimeterby disposing all the main museum spaces around a single courtyard. This decision allows us to workwith two different types of spaces: vibrant exterior spaces and cozy interior ones.
The same reasoning influenced the choice of the facade materials. We use a lot of reflectivemetallized, textured materials as they bring a vibrant shape and dynamic character to the museum,as the music does.Lastly, there is a bar on the site. The Kertem bar has a great community of its admirers and
friends as we can see on Instagram and Facebook. So we tried to keep this nice history and putour cafe zone right in place of today's Kertem. Moreover, the bar drives the area be lively even aftermuseum days open - hours.
Our architectural concept is based upon the following seven points:
1. Cellular structure instead of uniform
The form made of separate pixels allows minimizing a number of trees to be cut. The trees whichwill anyway be cut could be used for creation of new musical installations for the open-air zone. Thisway they get a new creative life.
2. Equalized mass
Equalizers, saxophone keys, organ pipes, all these musical attributes and reminiscences givean idea of a dynamic building form that lives both directions: horizontal and vertical. The variety ofbuilding heights organically joined the game of surrounding trees heights. This creates a uniquelandscape image every minute your move back, forward, left or right.
3. Sustainability
To ensure good interior daylight conditions the gradual height of the building is rising up to thenorth-to-southern direction. This shape of the building also gives the opportunity to integrate efficientsolar panels and organize green open-air terraces with a nice view. All the exterior pavements arepervious or torn off the ground to keep the existing soil biodiversity.
4. Mixed routes
Every visitor will be able to mix a route of his own. The system of elevators, each of them with itsown format, brings you to the branched net of rooms with different musical experiences and stories.Every elevator is made with its own concept that is based upon the diversity of the cabin sizes, interiordesigns, exposition content and duration. So you can choose to visit only one or two of youfavorite periods of the musical history or to visit them all and get much fun of it.
5. Integration
Horizontal links of the museum are provided by the two galleries. Their shape forms the mixedcourtyard with a chill zone, temporal musical art installations and info points.
6. Vibrant facades - chill out courtyard
All the active functional zones are placed on the perimeter of the building and are fully integratedwith the context. The cafeteria, the museum shop, the event hall and children's workshop rooms haveflexible facades opened up to the park in summer. Media facades over the exhibition part make itpossible to translate and light effect in a way to transform the place during the night. to thecontrast, the courtyard is more quiet and intimate place to have some rest and dive on the music
waves.
7. #Kertem
During the night time the museum is not open, but is still full of live. Kertem bar, open-air theaterand performances make it a remarkable stop point on a visitors evening route over the City Park.
There are four main zones envisioned to be organized in relations to the project site
1. The street entrance zone with the café, children playgrounds, museum shop and the main
bicycle parking places. This zone is visually integrated with the park pedestrian streets by the same
type of pavement.
2. The zone of the event hall. There is a main entrance to the hall from the green courtyard, andthe hall has flexible exterior wall that open the entire space to the open-air theater zone
3. The zone of the main exhibition. It is placed up on the Northern part of the site with great lightconditions (no directional sun). The exterior walls are also part of the exhibition because of the multiplemedia panels.
4. The goods and waste arrival zone and staff. It occupies all the North-Eastern part of thebuilding and has its own driveway. The driveway is operated for goods and waste arriving only, allthe other time it is bicycle and pedestrian routes.The resulting courtyard is also divided into four main zones (exhibition, event hall, café\storeand children activities rooms). These zones could be easily defined by the visitors because of thedifferent types of pavement used. The courtyard also becomes a great place for special music installationsand performances.
As for car parking, we propose to organize two alternative entrances: from the Olof Palme streetfor the museum staff and through an underground tunnel connecting the museum parking with theCity park parking area.
Constructively, the main museum volume is standing up on a slab that serves as a console preventingthe damage of the trees roots. The structural core of the building is presented by severalkernels with defined spacing. All the service lines, including the stairs and elevators are centered atthese kernels. They also contain integrated smart building system managing the microclimate, waterand ventilation systems.
The exterior cellular structure is a 5 x 5 grid that covers all the building and serves as its casing.
To ensure the high eco qualities of the building, according to the local factors, different solutionswere introduced: 1. efficient solar panel and green terraces to collect rainwater; 2. facades are dividedin two parts: partly transparent to pass the daylight and partly covered with metal sheets to
prevent the extra heating. The windows are furnished with the solar sensor shutters that regulatethe transparency of the windows and allow to save upon the air conditioning; 3.thermal heating andcooling
